Install Stetho in four steps.

Stetho comes from this website, not the Mac App Store, so macOS asks you to confirm it once. After that it opens like any other app. No permissions after that.

    Drag Stetho to Applications

    Open the Stetho.dmg you downloaded. In the window that appears, drag the Stetho icon onto the Applications folder, then eject the disk.

    Open it, then click Done

    Double-click Stetho in Applications. macOS says it couldn’t verify the app. Click the grey Done button. The blue Move to Bin button throws the app away.

    Click Open Anyway

    Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and scroll to Security. Next to the line about Stetho, click Open Anyway, then confirm with Touch ID or your password. If macOS asks once more, click Open.

    Paste your license key

    Stetho asks you to activate. Paste the key from the email you got after paying and click Activate. Moving to a new Mac later? Choose Deactivate this Mac on the old one first.

Prefer Terminal? One line.

This downloads Stetho, puts it in Applications and opens it, without the warning above. Paste it into Terminal:

It needs macOS 14 or later. You still paste your license key when Stetho opens.

The first time it runs. Nothing to set up.

  • Scores start right awayRecovery and Rest use numbers macOS already has. Strain begins counting once a minute while Stetho is open or in the menu bar.
  • No special permissionsNo Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Screen Recording or admin password. Stetho only reads what every app can see.
  • Open at loginTurn it on in Settings if you want a full day of Strain. The menu bar rings stay available without a window.

If something looks different.

I don’t see Open Anyway.

Open Stetho once first (step 2), then go back to Privacy & Security. The button appears for about an hour after macOS blocks the app.

I clicked Move to Bin by mistake.

Take Stetho out of the Trash, or download it again, and drag it back to Applications. Then start again from step 2.

Where is my license key?

In the receipt email from Dodo Payments, sent the moment you paid. Check your spam folder if it isn’t there, or write to [email protected].

How do I update Stetho?

It updates itself. You can also choose Check for Updates… in the Stetho menu, or see what’s new.
